Prof. Ares Kalandides PLACE MAKING • NEW LEISURE

“We need to dream the future of places.”

Prof. Ares Kalandides, a professor of urban management at Manchester Metropolitan University and director at the Institute of Place Management, has been advising cities and municipalities for over 20 years. He researches, writes and teaches about cities on a wide range of topics ranging from demography to migration and from civic participation to inner-city vacancies. He is co-editor of the journal “Journal of Place Management and Development” and is currently co-editing the “Routledge Handbook of Place”.

As a European, at home in Germany, Greece and England, speaker of 6 languages and with a patchwork biography – from the natural to the human and finally to the social sciences – he moves between cultures and disciplines. He has implemented projects in South America, Australia, Africa and Europe, worked in major cities and slums, in universities and on the streets. For Ares the future of the city is neither rosy nor gray: he observes reality and the trends that determine our lives. In the rapid pace of technological change, he sees both an opportunity and the danger of an illusion that technology will solve all our problems. He is convinced that we can only shape the future – fairer, more democratic and more human – if we face it.
